Virtual Charge Nurse (VCN)

Background

The Virtual Charge registered nurse (VCN) is a member of a collaborative care team who is responsible for leading day-to-day operations and providing virtual nursing care to a diverse population of adults across the care continuum. The VCN provides virtual nursing services to patients wherever they are. This can include acute and sub-acute care, emergency departments, critical care environments, skilled nursing facilities, in the field, or even in the patient home. The VCN provides remote supportive nursing care in partnership with clinical teams at the originating sites (where patients are located).

Role Purpose

As an expert nurse on the patient care team, the VCN works with originating site nursing leaders to participate in patient care delivery, translates evidence-based practice, provides patient and family education, and participates in the supervision, coaching, and mentoring of fellow nurses. The VCN assists in care coordination across all disciplines in collaboration with the originating site and other remote clinical team members. The VCN collaborates with originating site and remote patient care team members, nurse managers/directors or designee, support services, patients, and families to manage total patient care from admission to discharge to home. Communicates effectively with other health care professionals to discuss and problem-solve patient care concerns. Guides daily operations and oversight of the virtual center and employees.

Qualifications And Minimum Requirements

  • Valid RN licensure
  • Associates or bachelor’s degree in nursing from an acceptable and recognized institution
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 5 years of current experience in acute or critical care.
  • Critical care experience is preferred.
  • Acute cardiac care experience is preferred.
  • Charge Nurse/Manager/ leader experience required.
  • Demonstrates acute and/or critical care level skills and knowledge.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills in diagnosing clinical problems and in defining interventions.
  • Demonstrates effective English written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with windows-based computer operations.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of computer documentation and navigation (Epic, Cerner, Meditech, etc.).
  • EKG Certification
  • ACLS
  • Valid Basic Life support (BLS) for the health care provider.
  • Advanced certification in the area of specialty preferred.
  • Completion of unit-specific orientation.
